Antique ART NOUVEAU GOLD DIAMOND PIN Brooch 14k Gold Old European Mine Cut Diamond

$ 365.00

Antique Art Nouveau 14K Yellow Gold European Diamond Flower Brooch Pin. Beautiful antique brooch with a center .05 old european mine cut diamond. The diamond is really nice and clear and sparkly. The top of the pin features a big flower bloom of what I think is a poppy flower. The center bloom is mounted on a stem like form with two tone leaves. The brooch is made textured gold is referred to as bloom gold. "Blooming" was popular finishing technique for karat gold jewelry from 1870 to 1890. Creating a bloom finish involved dipping a karat gold item into a boiling mixture of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid), saltpetre (potassium nitrate), salt and water. This process burned off any alloys on the surface resulting in an alloy-free, thin layer of soft pure gold on the item. This thin gold skin was dotted by an infinite number of microscopic pits or holes which caused the matte sheen. The effect is reminiscent of the soft skin found on a peach. Dipping the item into the boiling mixture was referred to as colouring, and the resulting sheen was termed bloom. This beautiful bloom gold pin is very ornate and detailed with a very realistic look.

The pin is not marked for gold content but has been tested and is guaranteed to be 14K gold. The back of the leaves are marked PAT Nov. 4, 79 for the year 1879. The pin measures 1 3/4" long by 5/8" wide. The brooch weighs 4.2 grams. The pin is in very good condition for it's age. The pin clasp is in good working order. By viewing the reverse of the brooch it shows a silver color area. Not certain as to why. It is not compromised or damaged. This is a very fine Art Nouveau work of art worthy of any serious collectors collection.
